Comparing to its peers in Europe, Asia is arguably a laggard in terms of green and sustainable finance, including impact investment. Despite such a trend, the region still managed to draw much investor interest in the last couple of decades, for global money managers focusing on the region’s robust economic growth and, relatedly, financial returns. However, with investors’ increasing scrutiny of business practices not compliant with the common goal of a sustainable future, governments and regulators in the region have stepped up their efforts in recent years.
Hong Kong, being a leading international financial centre in the Asian time-zone, has been leading the change through adopting a carrot-and-stick approach. From providing incentives for asset managers to setting up regulatory requirements to issuers, orchestrated efforts and a range of measures have been in place. At the same time, the private sector has shown immense agility in this journey, taking advantage of the increasing investor interest as it spearheads the development of a sustainable economy. Such development has evidently brought about positive changes to the ecosystem.
In this event, we have invited speakers of New World Development, Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Boston Consulting Group, and Albamen Capital Partners to discuss some of the ongoing and upcoming initiatives. Topics covered will include:
- New private sector initiatives (e.g. issuance of green/sustainable bonds and investors’ feedback, some emerging investment targets)
- Development of carbon trading market in the region
- Hong Kong’s vision in the space of developing a green and sustainable future
