Hong Kong FinTech Week 2022, themed "PUSHING BOUNDARIES, REAPING BENEFITS.", which will be held in hybrid form, comprising both physical and virtual formats, from 31 Oct 2022 to 4 Nov 2022. The Financial Services Development Council sponsored Hong Kong FinTech Week again by hosting a panel discussion. Our Executive Director Dr King Au will be moderating a panel discussion, titled "The Future Landscape of Virtual Asset and Blockchain in Hong Kong".

Invented over a decade ago, blockchain technology and its applications have evolved and become mainstream. From the limited use in a single digital currency trading at the beginning, blockchain technology is now used not only in the real economy but also across financial institutions. In financial services alone, blockchain is used by banks, insurance companies, payment companies in such areas as international payment, money-laundering protection, carbon credit trading, and many more.

Indeed, across the financial services sector, the adoption of blockchain and other advanced technologies has enabled the enhancement of efficiency and better allocation of financial and human resources. Hong Kong, as a leading international financial centre in Asia, has a flourishing ecosystem, comprising startups and established tech businesses in the field, investors, as well as consumers/users of such technologies. With the blockchain technology adoption proliferating across different emerging and important initiatives, from carbon credit trading to metaverse, does Hong Kong have what it takes to facilitate the blooming ecosystem and the demand for it? What more needs to be done to make ourselves more future proof?

In this panel, the FSDC has invited experts from Animoca Brands, CryptoBLK, Mindworks, and Treelion to share their views on relevant topics, which include:
- Core strengths of Hong Kong’s fintech/blockchain ecosystem
- Areas that will require further policy support
- The outlook of fintech/blockchain talent market
