Joint Webinar – Looking Past the Crises: Financial Services in Hong Kong and the Role of the Belt and Road

Via Zoom Webinar
27 April 2020

The FSDC always seeks to look beyond the situations that challenge our financial markets and economy for direction as to how the industry should move forward. While Hong Kong is still troubled by Covid-19, trade tensions and the aftermath of social unrest, we co-hosted a webinar entitled "Looking Past the Crises: Financial Services in Hong Kong and the Role of the Belt and Road" in conjunction with Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) to gather insights of industry leaders who are also our board members.

Ms Ding Chen expected the pandemic to slow down the process of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) but BRI can still record growth. She also believed the pandemic might present a chance to promote renminbi globally given the US' latest policy towards the Mainland. Both Mr Brian Li and Ms Winnie Wong agreed that the COVID-19 outbreak has arguably accelerated the digital transformation in businesses. They echoed Ms Ding that opportunities presented by BRI would remain despite the pandemic, stressing that the banking and insurance industries of Hong Kong are ready and would have a crucial role to play in supporting and driving BRI projects.
